Lynda Flinn is the first to acknowledge her Kiwi days are busy. The popular café is open is open 7 days a week 8:30 am - 4 pm, year round.

The restaurateur has been catering in Chester, Nova Scotia for years - starting when her three sons were young - and before she opened her café. If the scheduling of an event co-operates, she's still keen to cater. She gets plenty of satisfaction from creating and presenting a beautiful meal for a special occasion or something simpler and more spontaneous such as baking a cake - or a birthday cake.

Over the past decade, two Chester summer residents have called on her to turn out their annual cocktail party. "I love doing that," says Lynda. "They're really into food." Another client from Toronto calls ahead to order a freezer and pantry full of two-weeks worth of food. "She can come and relax."

Lynda is happy to present the ultimate dinner prepared on site, served by wait and bartender staff. After the guests leave, and before the caterers go home, they make sure all traces of the meal are whisked away.

Some prefer her Dinner in a Box for pick-up . . . or any other flavourful choice between the two.

The Kiwi soup menu is impressive, with the most popular being Hungarian Mushroom. "I did five pounds of mushrooms and the soup didn't last the day," says cook Mary MacDonald. Early in the Spring, over a six-day stretch, she went through 15 large pots of soup.

"At the end of the day," she adds, "if we have enough left, we'll freeze it." That's another popular choice with Kiwi regulars, a 500 or 1,000 ml container of their favourite soups, frozen.

Kiwi sweet trays for four people and up, enjoy guest-of-honour status at many special occasions. Sandy Reid makes sure the delectable treats appear as good as they taste. "They look great," says Lynda.
