Lynda Flinn is the first to acknowledge her Kiwi days are busy. The popular café is open 7 days a week 8:30 am - 4 pm, year round. To the flavourful mix, is Kiwi Too - open whenever the café is, it's accessible from the restaurant. All Kiwi takeout packaging is eco friendly - Lynda is a strong supporter of the environment - the café composts everything possible.

For all you ice cream fans - Kiwi is celebrating the season - from the Victoria Day long weekend in May to the Labour Day long weekend in September - selling Dee Dee's fabulous gourmet ice cream by the scoop - and the tub!

Whether they're full time or summer residents, once the sailing and gardening season arrives, the last thing people want to do is drive to Halifax to shop for ingredients. Being stuck in the kitchen preparing meals is no picnic either. Relax! The Kiwi solves both problems.

Fantastic frozen soups, meals, comfort food

Small batches of soups and meals are prepared in the kiwi kitchen using the same fine ingredients served in the café - fresh fruit and vegetables and quality meats - without preservatives or additives. Watch for updated lists in the near future.

The Kiwi soup menu is impressive, with the most popular being Hungarian Mushroom. "I did five pounds of mushrooms and the soup didn't last the day," says cook Mary MacDonald. Early in the Spring, over a six-day stretch, she went through 15 large pots of soup.

"At the end of the day," she adds, "if we have enough left, we'll freeze it." That's another popular choice with Kiwi regulars, a 500 or 1,000 ml container of their favourite soups, frozen.

"In this day and age," Lynda says, "people don't need more stuff, that's why people like food gifts. Quality gift baskets are a treat, a little splurge for special occasions and the hard-to-buy people - they get to try something they normally wouldn't."

Catering - lap of luxury

Lynda is happy to present the ultimate dinner prepared on site, served by wait and bartender staff. After the guests leave, and before the caterers go home, they make sure all traces of the meal are whisked away.

Over the past decade, two Chester summer residents have called on her to turn out their annual cocktail party. "I love doing that," says Lynda. "They're really into food." Another client from Toronto calls ahead to order a freezer and pantry full of two-weeks worth of food. "She can come and relax."

Sweet on sweets

Kiwi sweet trays for four people and up enjoy guest-of-honour status at many special occasions. The Kiwi Kitchen staff makes sure the delectable treats appear as good as they taste. "They look great," says Lynda.
