    Our Local Food Bounty

    We're honoured to partner with local people as passionate about good food as we are!

    Oulton's Meats - almost every top chef buys some of their meat selections from Oulton's Meats near Windsor, Nova Scotia, notes Slow Food Nova Scotia. Mike Oulton has been raising and selling meat for decades, everything from beef to chickens, rabbits and boar. And his son Wayne continues the tradition, introducing new species such as 15 exotic varieties including pheasant and ostrich.

    Wayne and Nicole Oulton of W.G. Oulton and Sons Ltd. of Windsor were presented with the prestigious 2008 Atlantic Outstanding Young Farmers award. All the farms animals are raised free range and their woodlot is managed, with selective cutting. A man-made wetland on the property, which helps to filter run-off before it can enter ponds or streams. 

    Indian Point Marine Farms Ltd. has been growing mussels in the waters of Mahone Bay, Nova Scotia since 1982. This small family-owned business takes pride in the quality of their mussels. They work hard to ensure the sustainability of their business while maintaining the water quality that produces their fine products. Their goal is to produce good, safe and nutritious food while minimizing the impact on the marine environment.


    LaHave Bakery uses locally grown, fresh-milled grains for their traditional breads, rolls, cakes and cookies. A cool, slow rise gives their product excellent flavour and texture.

    Their selection of breads includes seed, potato, 12-grain and herb cheese. Other baked goods are tea buns, bagels, herbed pita bread, butter tarts and scones. 


    Ran-Cher Acres is a dairy goat operation owned and operated by Randy and Cheryl Hiltz and their children Aaron and Sara.

    On their farm that overlooks the beautiful Annapolis Valley, the family has cared for 60 purebred Saanen dairy goats for over 20 years. Ran-Cher customers claim their cheeses and yogurts are "as good as anywhere in the world."

    Boulangerie La Vendeenne bread is certified organic through the Maritime Organic Growers Association. For David, deciding to use organic ingredients for his bread made sense. "I grew up eating really good food," he says.

    Having organic certification assures his customers that both quality of ingredients and certified organic processing standards are adhered to. The modern stone oven used at Boulangerie La Vendeenne is from Quebec, and the bread is baked directly on a large stone. French bread typically has a well-defined crust, a chewy texture, and is a pleasure to eat. Along with a wide variety of fresh yeast breads such - baguettes, multi-grain, and a sweet apricot and almond bread, the bakery produces a sour dough bread which David says is his most popular.

    You may purchase this lovely bread delivered a couple of times per week at the cafe along with fresh croissant and pain au chocolate. Special orders welcomed.

    Peasant's Pantry, New Ross has been making a variety of specialty meats and charcuterie, including fresh and smoked sausages, house-smoked ham, bacon and pâtés, since 2011. They use high quality, locally raised meat and practice nose-to-tail butchery without fillers.
